Old sterndrives, im my experince are nothing but problems. I reckon if you built a new boat and i had to decide whether i wanted a sterndrive or outboard i'd take an outboard. If your boat was designed with sterndrives and they are in good condition then yeah keep them. Have a dive door in the transom easy to get back in the boat without eggbeaters in the way. My donks are mostly under the cabin floor so little room is lost. No one does their own servicing on new motors anymore, unless they want to void the warranty. The maintenance cost difference is even more. If you look at the lifetime cost of these motors, you’ll probably spend more for an outboard. However, the same inboard motor will last much longer and require much less maintenance. The cost of inboard diesels will be much higher than that of outboards too. I paid 25k for two new 5.7 mercruisers and another 25 k for fitting/ fibreglassing/ beds/cabin work haulout etc etc blah blah. If you look at options that have roughly the same specs, you’ll wind up paying much more for an inboard motor. An inboard diesel will more likely generate more noise inside the boat. I don't go that fast but don't use anywhere near that either. Have you had inboards previously? Have you priced 2 new 300 hp out board motors lately? How much to fit them? Have you priced transom repairs/ adjustments and assorted costs to suit outboards? Have you ran those size motors at WOT ( l have a mate who uses around 250 litres an hour at WOT.at around 48 kts.
